Tanjung Kelayang (The Tanjung Kelayang Trias Granite Rock)

Tanjung Kelayang Geosite is one of the most famous natural icons of Belitong Island. Formed by granite rocks from the Triassic period (208–245 million years ago), the area contains minerals such as quartz, alkali feldspar, mica, hornblende, and biotite. These rocks have weathered into spectacular tor landscapes, where giant granite boulders are stacked in dramatic shapes along the north coast.

What makes Tanjung Kelayang truly unique is its role as the starting point for Belitong’s island-hopping tourism. Just off the shore lies a cluster of small islands, each with its own charm. Popular destinations include Garuda Island with its bird-shaped rock, Pasir Island which appears only at low tide, Kepayang Island with its conservation programs, and the historic Lengkuas Island, home to a Dutch colonial lighthouse that has guided sailors for over a century. Other gems include Batu Berlayar Island, Burung Island, Malang Ara Island, and Kelayang Island, each offering pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant marine life.

Tanjung Kelayang is more than just a tourism hub, it also holds cultural and historical significance. The lighthouse on Lengkuas Island is a reminder of Belitong’s important role in maritime trade during the colonial era. Local traditions of seafaring and fishing remain strong, blending history with daily life.
Today, Tanjung Kelayang is being developed into a leading geotourism destination within the Belitong UNESCO Global Geopark. Tourism here not only highlights the natural beauty but also promotes education, conservation, and local empowerment. Visitors can enjoy snorkeling, diving, and island exploration while learning about the geological history that shaped this landscape millions of years ago.

With its mix of stunning scenery, rich culture, and eco-friendly tourism, Tanjung Kelayang represents the spirit of Belitong where nature, history, and people come together in harmony.
