Juru Seberang Geosite is a unique site in Belitong UNESCO Global Geopark that tells the story of transformation from a former mining site into a thriving center of conservation and eco-tourism. Located only about 5 km from Tanjung Pandan City, this geosite is very easy to access and offers both natural beauty and cultural experiences.
Geologically, Juru Seberang is rich in tin alluvial deposits, formed from the weathering of ancient Tanjung Pandan granite and the Kelapakampit metasediment rocks. While the rocks date back to the Permo-Carboniferous and Triassic periods, the tin-rich alluvial rock belongs to the more recent Quaternary age. However, beyond its geological importance, the geosite has become a symbol of community action and environmental care.
In the past, mining was the main activity here. But the local community made a bold decision to stop mining and instead focus on restoring mangrove forests and promoting sustainable livelihoods. This shift gave birth to what is now known as Belitong Mangrove Park, along with other areas such as a Horticulture Park and a Camping Ground.
Visitors can enjoy a wide range of activities: river trekking, mangrove walks, birdwatching, oyster gathering, mangrove restoration, silvofishery, horticultural trails, and even off-road adventures. Cultural experiences like the traditional Bedulang feast enrich the visit, blending environmental tourism with local heritage. The area also supports marine life such as fish, shellfish, and sea cucumbers, as well as diverse mangrove species and coastal plants like sea cypresses.
Juru Seberang today is not just a geosite; it is a living example of how communities can create a culture of conservation. By combining ecology, geology, and culture, it provides both education and recreation while contributing to sustainable development in Belitong.
