Gunung Lumut Geosite is a fascinating destination in the south of Belitong Island, known for its unique geology, natural forest, and enchanting moss garden. Rising up to 165 meters above sea level, it is the highest point in the region, offering visitors a stunning panoramic view from its peak, complete with scenic photo spots perfect for capturing memories.
Geologically, Gunung Lumut represents the Kelapa Kampit Formation, a metasedimentary rock formation that has undergone transformation into quartzite. Visitors can also find traces of magnetic rocks, which formed due to granitic intrusions millions of years ago. This combination makes Gunung Lumut a living showcase of Belitong’s geological history, where deep Earth processes are preserved in the rocks.
One of the most captivating features of Gunung Lumut is its moss garden, located near the summit. This rare ecosystem is home to at least nine species of moss (Bryophyta sp.), thriving in the cool, moist environment. The mosses blanket stones and tree roots, creating a magical, almost fairy-tale atmosphere. Scientists believe the development of this moss garden may be closely linked to the unique geological conditions of the hill.
In addition to moss, Gunung Lumut’s biodiversity includes around nine species of orchids, among them one rare variety, as well as the medicinal plant pasak bumi (Eurycoma longifolia), valued in traditional medicine. Its 18 hectares of forest remain lush and natural, making it an important area for both conservation and eco-tourism.
