Protecting Earth’s Heritage for Future Generations
At the heart of Belitong UNESCO Global Geopark, conservation is the core pillar that sustains all our efforts. We are dedicated to protecting and preserving our invaluable geological assets, rich biodiversity, and unique cultural heritage, ensuring these wonders can be cherished by generations to come. Our conservation initiatives are rooted in the active participation of local communities, fostering collaboration to maintain the integrity of this remarkable earth heritage landscape.
- Sea Turtle Preservation
The coastlines of Belitong are vital nesting grounds for sea turtles. We collaborate with local communities and partners to protect these endangered species. A significant part of our work involves releasing hatchlings back into their natural habitat. To date, 300 Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbriata) hatchlings and 78 Green turtle (Chelonia mydas) hatchlings have been released. These turtles were hatched through a semi-natural incubation program managed by PT Penyu Lima Konservindo on Cina Island, part of the Lima Island cluster, and were released there to help bolster wild populations. Furthermore, sea turtle conservation areas are continuously being developed in locations such as Tanjung Kelayang to foster a healthy and sustainable marine ecosystem. This release was conducted following strict conservation procedures and under the expert supervision of the BKSDA (Indonesia’s Nature Conservation Agency) to ensure the highest chance of survival.
- Protection of Endemic Flora and Fauna
We manage key conservation areas like the Peramun Hill Community Forest, a site successfully transformed from land vulnerable to exploitation into a center for biodiversity. This area protects hundreds of plant species, including rare and endemic Belitong flora, and serves as a sanctuary for wildlife such as the Belitung Tarsier (Cephalopachus bancanus saltator) and the Sunda Pangolin.
