Belitong UNESCO Global Geopark Releases Baby Sea Turtles to Support Marine Conservation

Belitong, Bangka Belitung โ€“ 16 September 2025, In a continued effort to safeguard marine biodiversity, Belitong UNESCO Global Geopark successfully carried out the release of 300 Hawksbill turtle hatchlings (Eretmochelys imbricata) and 78 Green turtle hatchlings (Chelonia mydas). Both species are legally protected under Indonesian law due to their endangered status.

The hatchlings were the result of a semi-natural incubation program managed by PT Penyu Lima Konservindo in collaboration with Belitong Geopark and Environmental Agency of Belitung Regency on Cina Island, part of the Lima Island cluster in Belitung Regency. The release took place on Cina Island, Gersik Village, Selat Nasik District, (part of Mendanau Island Geosite).

This activity followed strict standard operational procedures and was conducted under the supervision of authorized officers and witnesses. The approach ensured that the young turtles were safely returned to their natural habitat, maximizing their chances of survival and contributing to the recovery of wild populations.

Sea turtle conservation plays a vital role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. Hawksbill turtles help sustain healthy coral reefs by feeding on sponges, while Green turtles maintain seagrass beds that support diverse marine life. By protecting these species, Belitong UNESCO Global Geopark not only contributes to global biodiversity goals but also reinforces its commitment to sustainable conservation practices.

The release event highlights the synergy between conservation stakeholders, local communities, and government agencies in protecting Belitungโ€™s marine environment. Through consistent conservation programs, Belitong UNESCO Global Geopark aims to strengthen environmental awareness, promote sustainable marine management, and ensure that future generations can witness the beauty of these iconic sea creatures in the wild.
