What is Geopark

   

UNESCO Global Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development. A UNESCO Global Geopark uses its geological heritage, in connection with all other aspects of the area’s natural and cultural heritage, to enhance awareness and understanding of key issues facing society, such as using our earth’s resources sustainably, mitigating the effects of climate change and reducing natural disasters-related risks.

By raising awareness of the importance of the area’s geological heritage in history and society today, UNESCO Global Geoparks give local people a sense of pride in their region and strengthen their identification with the area. The creation of innovative local enterprises, new jobs and high quality training courses is stimulated as new sources of revenue are generated through geotourism, while the geological resources of the area are protected.

 

Three Pillars of Geoparks 

Conservation

Conservation in geoparks goes beyond protecting landscapes, it includes safeguarding biodiversity, geological features, and cultural heritage.  Belitong UNESCO Global Geopark

  About Belitong Geopark

Covering an area of around 4,800 km² of land and 13,000 km² of sea, Belitong Geopark is dotted with 241 small islands, including Mendanau, Kalimambang, Gresik, Seliu, Memporang, and others. Its tropical climate, coastal beauty, and diverse landscapes make it a remarkable natural area.

Geology and Landscape

The land consists of lowlands and hills, with the highest point reaching 510 meters above sea level in the central region. The Burung Mandicule cluster, at 415 masl, is among its prominent hills. The geopark’s geology reflects millions of years of Earth’s history, from granite formations in Tanjungpandan, metasedimentary rocks of the Kelapakampit Formation, to Jurassic adamelite in the Baginde Rocks.

People and Culture

As of the year of 2022, Belitong Island is home to about 324.240 people. The majority live in Tanjungpandan, while Selat Nasik has the lowest population density. Six religions are practiced here, reflecting rich cultural diversity.

Most residents work in agriculture (such as white pepper, coconut, and oil palm), fisheries, and tin mining, which has long supported the local economy. Many villages are coastal, making fishing a vital livelihood.

Belitong Geopark unites this geological, cultural, and natural wealth into one sustainable destination, offering both global significance and local pride.

 

The Journey of Belitong Geopark 

  • 2016 – Initiation of Belitong Geopark by ITB ’81 Foundation, experts, and government agencies through mapping and research.
  • 2017 – Declared as a National Geopark, the 6th in Indonesia.
  • 2018 – Indonesia submitted Belitong’s dossier to UNESCO for international recognition.
  • 2019 – Belitong was declared eligible for global status.
  • 2021 – Officially recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp). Belitong became the 66th geopark in Asia-Pacific and the 169th in the world.

Today

Belitong Geopark now manages 24+ sites, not only geological but also cultural, historical, and biodiversity-based. Community empowerment, eco-tourism, and private–public collaboration ensure sustainability and balanced local development.
