Buku Limau Island Geosite is a hidden gem with breathtaking coastal scenery and rich cultural heritage. One of its most remarkable features is the ancient coral reef system formed during the Holocene period, giving the island a unique geological and ecological character. Alongside the reefs, you can also find stretches of ancient seabed sand that today serve as residential areas, home to the Bugis ethnic community who have lived here for generations.
The island is not only a place of natural beauty but also a vibrant center of daily life. Development on Buku Limau has brought essential facilities such as piers and a Diving Center, making it easier for visitors to explore the underwater world. Tourism continues to grow here, complementing the island’s thriving fishing industry. Preserving nature is also at the heart of Buku Limau. Together with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the Geopark Management Body works to protect marine biodiversity through a Marine Park Conservation program. Local communities, supported by divers and visitors, take an active role in coral reef restoration, including coral planting activities around Penanas Island and Buku Limau.
