Belitong UNESCO Global Geopark took part in the 11th International Conference on UNESCO Global Geoparks, held in Temuco, Chile, in 2025. Representing Belitong at this prestigious global event was Yeni Srihartanti, a marine conservation expert from the Belitong Geopark Management Board and Head of the Marine and Fisheries Agency of East Belitung Regency.
This international gathering, hosted by Kutralkura UNESCO Global Geopark, is one of the most important events for the global geopark community. It brings together experts, managers, and enthusiasts from across the world to foster cooperation, strengthen collaboration, and exchange best practices. The conference also features scientific sessions addressing key issues such as geodiversity, sustainability, conservation, and community development.
Belitong was one of only four official delegations from Indonesia, making the country’s presence especially meaningful among the 12 geoparks in Indonesia. During the conference, Belitong seized the opportunity to express its interest in hosting the 12th edition of the International Conference on UNESCO Global Geoparks. Alongside other candidates, including Khorat (Thailand), Kinabalu (Malaysia), Oeste (Portugal), and Lauhanvuori–Hämeenkangas (Finland). Belitong highlighted its commitment to promoting its geopark on the global stage.
Although the hosting rights for the next conference were ultimately awarded to Oeste Geopark in Portugal, Belitong’s candidacy reflected the management board’s strong commitment to elevate Belitong’s international profile. It also underscored how geoparks can play a crucial role in empowering local communities and supporting sustainable economic development.
From this experience, Belitong gained valuable insights into the bidding process and global collaboration mechanisms. The management board affirmed its commitment to continue strengthening international ties and announced plans to submit a future bid to host the event, showcasing Belitong’s growing role within the international geopark network.
