From Culture to Climate: A Coastal School for the Future

In 2022, the success of SATAM inspired the creation of Sekolah Alam Pesisir (Nature School of Coastal Village), launched at the Tanjung Kelayang Geosite. This program brings a fresh approach to education by introducing younger generations to the importance of coastal and marine environments through hands-on, fun, and meaningful activities.

The coastal school emphasizes the role of the sea as a climate regulator system, teaching students how oceans absorb heat, store carbon, and protect communities against climate change impacts. By blending science with local knowledge, Sekolah Alam Pesisir helps children understand why coastal protection and resilience are crucial for the future.

Learning here is never limited to classrooms. Students join interactive workshops such as traditional seafood cooking, weaving with plants from the coast, and practical marine waste management. They also explore marine biodiversity in simple, engaging ways guided by both marine biologists and local experts who share cultural insights and indigenous wisdom.

What makes this initiative special is the involvement of senior community members, who act as teachers and storytellers. Their deep understanding of local heritage and traditions ensures that young learners not only grasp ecological knowledge but also develop respect for cultural identity.

By connecting science, culture, and community, Sekolah Alam Pesisir equips students with awareness and skills to become future guardians of Belitongโ€™s coasts and seas. It transforms the story of the ocean from just a backdrop of daily life into a living classroom one that inspires resilience, sustainability, and pride.
