Since 2019, SATAM (Sekolah Alam Desa Tambang) has become an innovative extracurricular program that brings young generations closer to Belitong UNESCO Global Geopark. Held every weekend around the Open Pit Nam Salu Geosite, SATAM invites students from elementary, middle, and high schools to learn about geology, environment, and culture in a fun and interactive way.
At SATAM, classes go beyond traditional textbooks. Children explore how rocks were formed millions of years ago, understand the history of tin mining that shaped Belitong’s economy, and discover the unique biodiversity that thrives in this island ecosystem. The program also highlights local traditions and cultural wisdom, connecting scientific knowledge with the community’s heritage.
What makes SATAM unique is its practical approach. Students participate in workshops on waste management, biodiversity preservation, and conservation of land and water resources. These hands-on activities not only build awareness but also inspire real actions toward sustainability in daily life.
The teaching team is equally special, consisting of resident geologists and local villagers who share both scientific expertise and traditional knowledge. This integration creates a holistic learning experience, ensuring that education remains rooted in the local context while preparing the younger generation to face global challenges.
By nurturing curiosity and responsibility, SATAM plays a vital role in shaping future ambassadors of Belitong Geopark. It shows that learning about Earth, culture, and sustainability can be exciting, meaningful, and deeply connected to the identity of the community.
Through SATAM, the story of Belitong’s past in tin mining evolves into a platform for building a greener, wiser, and more sustainable future.
