Hutan Kerangas Cendil, also known as the Cendil Heath Forest, is one of Belitong’s most unique natural treasures. This forest grows on sandy soil formed from the weathering of ancient rocks called the Tajam Formation. Because the soil here is very poor in nutrients, only certain plants can survive, creating a very special ecosystem. Scientists also note that the land holds rare earth elements (REE), adding to its geological importance.
Although the land is fragile and easily damaged by fire, Hutan Kerangas Cendil is home to many rare plants. You can find the sapu-sapu shrub (Baeckea frutescens), the sundew plant (Drosera burmanii) which traps insects, and different kinds of mushrooms. Many of these plants are useful for traditional medicine and natural remedies. Local people even process them into herbal products that support health and wellbeing.
The forest is not only about plants—it is also about people. The local community has created trekking paths that let visitors explore the forest safely. Along the way, guests can enjoy local food and see products made from native plants. This activity is part of Belitong’s effort to grow geotourism, combining nature, culture, and sustainable living.
Walking through Hutan Kerangas Cendil feels like entering a different world. The air is fresh, the surroundings are calm, and the plants show how life can adapt to even the hardest conditions. For visitors, it is more than a forest—it is a place to learn, to relax, and to see the amazing power of nature.
Hutan Kerangas Cendil reminds us that from the simplest soil can grow extraordinary beauty.
